Assistant Secretary for Health
Admiral Giroir guides the USPHS Commissioned Corps’ strategic and policy direction while supervising the Surgeon General’s operational command of the USPHS Commissioned Corps. He also acts as the primary advisor to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services on matters of public health and science.

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health
Along with the Assistant Secretary for Health, Rear Admiral Trent-Adams directs the USPHS Commissioned Corps’ programs, guides policy development, and sets its public health legislative and program priorities.

Vice Admiral Jerome M. Adams, MD, MPH

Surgeon General
Vice Admiral Jerome Adams is America’s Doctor. As Surgeon General, he ensures every American can access the resources they need to prevent injury and illness and improve their health. He oversees the operation of the USPHS Commissioned Corps, encouraging officers to lead with science, spearhead solutions to our nation’s most pressing health problems, and deliver high quality health care to those who need it most.

Rear Admiral Susan Orsega, MSN, FNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN

Director, Commissioned Corps Headquarters
Rear Admiral Susan Orsega directs all USPHS Commissioned Corps functions regarding personnel, administration, officer readiness and deployment, policy, and more. She is also the principal advisor to the Surgeon General on issues related to USPHS Commissioned Corps training, preparedness, and overall force fitness.

Each Chief Professional Officer provides leadership and coordination to one of 11 professional categories in the USPHS Commissioned Corps. Chief Professional Officers are influential on matters such as recruitment, retention, and the career development of Public Health Service officers. These leaders facilitate professional and community relationships to promote engagement with the USPHS Commissioned Corps and increase awareness of the Surgeon General's initiatives to protect the health and wellness of all Americans.
